Welcome to Craigavon Area Hospital's new Midwifery Led Unit website. Our new midwifery unit is a very special place where women have the opportunity to experience their childbirth in a calm, friendly and caring environment. All at the Midwifery Unit staff would like to express thanks to Rushmere Shopping Centre for helping to support this website. All our midwives are expert in natural and normal childbirth which involves little intervention. We have just passed our fifth birthday, and are looking forward to our Midwifery Led Unit growing and developing over the coming months and years to further become a special place where women, babies and their families are nurtured. During your stay you will be looked after by our experienced team of midwives who will make your stay with us relaxing and caring. During labour, mothers are encouraged to experience alternative forms of pain relief. The facilities we offer are purpose built ensuite rooms. Our unit is a safe and secure place, with 24 hour CCTV in operation. All rooms are equipped with televisions and sofas to provide additional comfort and relaxation in a home from home environment. From its birth, the Midwifery Led Unit has achieved many milestones, being the first of its kind in Ireland. Up until October 2005 we had undertaken 950 water births and we are now leading the way in providing water births in Ireland. Women have control over their labour and the birth of their babies, being cared for by midwives who specialize in natural childbirth. When a problem arises, emergency help is very near at hand. We have recently installed a much larger birthing pool, which enables mothers to have even more room when having a water birth. Active Birth workshops are now available to women and their partners.
