| Experience has shown us that if a woman is attended by a midwife that she has come to know and trust that she will be more relaxed and the labour will be easier. Women who are attended by a midwife are less likely to require pain relief and have slightly shorter labours. This special event is one that will live with you all your life. Even if its your first baby, you can have your baby in the Midwifery Led Unit and: You are in good Health. You are pregnant with one baby. You have had no complications in this or other pregnancies. The MLU is not suitable if when you come to the hospital in labour and: You are less than 37 weeks pregnant. Your waters break and the fluid is not clear. Your baby's heartbeat is causing concern. Your blood pressure and temperature are not normal. Who will look after me in labour? One midwife will care for and support you with your partner, throughout your labour. A second midwife may be there when your baby is born, to help care for you and your baby. Please also see our pages on WATERBIRTHS. and PAIN RELIEF You are encouraged to eat and drink regularly during your early stages of labour and to rest as much as possible. When or if you feel you are ready to use the birthing pool or bath, they are filled with warm water. The temperature is monitored constantly. An underwater Sonacaid is used to monitor the sound of your baby's heart regularly. Your partner will be shown how to help you breathe and you may play music of your choice to help you relax if need be. Once labour is established our midwives will be present with you until your baby is born. Once your baby is born, you and your partner are then free to spend the first precious moments together. Our midwives are on hand to show you feeding techniques and to assist you in any way. Safety Around 8 out of 10 of all deliveries are 'normal'. However, because your safety is our main concern, we take every care to make sure you have a safe delivery. It is only when a problem arises during labour or birth that a doctor is involved. This means sometimes we have to transfer women to the Delivery Suite in Craigavon Area Hospital, where a consultant can supervise their care. The midwifery team will be delighted to discuss any aspect of your care, and we respect your freedom of choice. |
